Movern Callar (2002)

You see this picture? This is how I felt for most of this movie -- bored, drained, tired, uncomfortable because I was lying on the floor, probably cold [this movie takes place in the winter], thinking about pizza [this movie would have been better if Morvern Callar liked pizza more]. The basic plot - without ruining too much - is that Morvern Callar is a person with weird name and a Scottish accent. Her boyfriend offs himself and she is upset, so she decides to submit his novel as her own [dishonest but smart] and uses his set-aside funeral money for a Spanish vacation. This lady is really smart, but really unsavory.

Here are some good things about the movie: Samantha Morton is becoming a favorite actor of mine. In America! Minority Report! Synecadoush, NY! These are all great movies [I saw Minority Report and Syn, NY twice in theaters], and Samantha Morton is really good at acting. Sometimes she makes bad decisions about what movies she's in though, like this time and that other time. Another good thing about this movie is that it's directed by a woman [Lynne Ramsey] and that it deals with feminism question mark. It seems that Morvern is trapped in her hetero relationship and convention and only experiences freedom when she escapes these things. Question mark, though.

Bad things about this movie: It's boring and slow. It's pretentious. I had to listen to Boards of Canada on the soundtrack. Unacceptable!

Here is a picture to remind you all that Minority Report is a great movie:
