If you were ever a person in 1993, and especially if you were under 10 in 1993, then this movie was pretty important to you. Maybe some of you even got its soundtrack since it featured MJ and NKOTB. Not like I own it now or anything, just that I heard it's a good soundtrack and all. I haven't seen this since the 90s, and it was great to rewatch it with my pal who also loves it.
This is definitely a great movie -- suspenseful, pro-animal, pro-Pacific Northwest, and pro the-soft-side-of Michael Madsen. This is seriously one of his best roles, people. Plus he's easy on the eyes, just sayin.

Another thing -- Free Willy as a title allows for a number of crude jokes to be made. AND the film stars August Schellenberg who plays Randolph. Even though FW reinforces some stereotypes about Native Peoples [that they are one-with-nature, that they chant, that they make a lot of totem poles], it does allow for Randolph to explain a little about his heritage in respectful way. Also, his character is pretty rad and his identity is not 100% about being a Native American. [He becomes more of a key figure in the 2nd and 3rd sequels to this movie].
4/5
The best part about this movie was this concrete slab that was sort of a slab except not. Like, it looked like it was really small, but it actually wasn't. It was a wall of concrete, but the water covered it up. It was sort of like an optical illusion except with concrete.

ReplyDelete1.) This movie does NOT star August Schellenberg. He has a role, yes, but NOT the staring role.
What kind of crude jokes could be made with Free Willy? I don't get it.
ReplyDeleteAt the beginning of this movie, a child commits a crime that is fairly minor. Over the course of the film, he learns to commit a tremendously larger crime.
ReplyDeletei am offended that you elaborate on the soft side of michael madsen yet you fail to wax eloquent on the the bundle of wonder that is lorri petty. i know you have seen "a league of their own." add a full body wetsuit, and how can you resist?
