Funny Ha Ha (2002)

I hate this movie because it thinks its so cool inventing its own genre and using 16mm film and all. Barf. For those of you who have not seen this movie, don't. Yes, I know you'll protest and say "It's important." And I'll say "It's important for you not to watch another movie with an all white cast.

I guess the worst thing about this movie is that it is about boring folks who do lame things -- like hang out and work in temp agencies and never say anything non-trite and usually wear all-beige ensembles. Sooooooooooo boring, right? Besides taking place in Boston [a place I used to know], the only okay thing about this movie is that its protagonist is a lady.

Try harder, mumblecore. And I don't mean with movies like Mutual Appreciation.

Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962)

Agnes Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7 marks a landmark in my movie-viewing -- it's the 250th movie I've seen this year, so great job. I was excited to see this movie because it is about a woman and it is directed by a woman. For some reason, France is kind of okay in making sure that films by ladies' movies get produced and stuff. Agnes Varda is one of the most important directors in the French New Wave and I had never seen one of her movies, so I watched 2 today.

Cleo from 5 to 7 stars the lovely Corinne Marchand. The flick captures 2 hours of Cleo's life, almost in real time, which is cool. As she awaits the results of whether or not she has cancer, she roams around Paris and has hella depression. She is also narcissistic and a bit annoying. The movie is for sure nice to look at, but it's difficult for it to avoid dullness since it a movie about nothing.

Wings (1927)

BORED. This melodramatic movie is about flying and WWI. I guess it was important to see Clara Bow in a movie? I only watched it as part of my Best Picture Series, but it was pretty painful sitting through two and a half hours of warmongering, loop-de-loops, and crying. Thumbs down, Academy. Thumbs down. It's guaranteed that if you make a movie close to three hours you will win an undeserved Best Picture Award. Only once did a 3hr film deserve that Oscar.
